The Main Thing
Through the prophet Amos, God predicted a terrible calamity that would be coming on his people. It wasn’t a hurricane or an earthquake, but the worst kind of disaster that could befall the Lord’s chosen ones – a famine! But God quickly clarified that it would “not be a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord” (Am.8:11). It is the preacher’s responsibility to insure that Christ’s words and the Holy Spirit’s inscripturated truths are never in short supply. We must do all we can to keep God’s word central in our lives and in our ministries. We must be ready to sacrifice everything to preach it with clarity and boldness. We must always press on to become more adept and proficient in mining God’s truths in his word and presenting it in with specificity and applicability. It is our honor, our privilege and our obligation to tirelessly proclaim his word as long as we are able.
